It is not sweat. It is not poor hygiene. It is a molecule most people have never heard of, and ordinary soap washes straight past it.
There is a moment many people over 40 will recognise. You take a freshly washed shirt out of the wardrobe, hold it up for a second, and something is off. Not dirty. Just not fresh.
Most people blame the detergent, the washing machine, the wardrobe. They switch deodorant, shower more often, reach for more fragrance. None of it changes anything, because none of it touches the actual problem.
The problem is called 2-nonenal. It is a compound the body starts producing around the age of 40, when the skin's own fatty acids oxidise. Japan has studied this for decades and even has a word for it: kareishu. Most other languages have no name for it at all, which is exactly why nobody discusses it.

Your deodorant
Deodorants are built to fight bacteria. They slow down the bacteria in the underarm that break down fresh sweat, and for that job they work well.
2-nonenal is not produced by bacteria. It is the result of fatty acids oxidising in the skin itself, and it forms mainly on the back of the neck, behind the ears, across the upper back and on the chest. In other words, everywhere nobody applies deodorant.
Your own nose
Human smell is designed to report change, not steady states. A scent that is constantly present drops out of conscious perception within minutes. Scientists call it olfactory adaptation, and it is the reason nobody can smell their own home.
With a scent that comes from your own skin and is present day and night, that adaptation is total. The person carrying it is the only one in the room who cannot detect it.
The pillowcase test
Take the pillowcase off in the morning, seal it in a bag, and open it in the evening after you have been out of the house for an hour. Your nose is reset by then, so you smell what other people have been smelling all day.
Your soap
Ordinary soaps and shower gels work with surfactants. Surfactants dissolve oil and dirt and rinse them away. For sebum, dust and fresh sweat, that works reliably.
2-nonenal is an aldehyde. It does not sit on the skin as an oily film. It binds to proteins in the upper layers of the skin and to textile fibres, and surfactants cannot lift it out. That is why the fresh feeling after a shower lasts an hour or two and then fades.
Showering more often can make it worse, because harsh surfactants weaken the skin barrier and encourage the very oxidation that produces nonenal in the first place.
Your washing machine
Nonenal transfers from skin to fabric and settles in the fibres. Pillowcases, collars, car headrests and sofa cushions are the usual reservoirs.
A 30 or 40 degree cycle with standard detergent only removes part of it. Fabric softener makes things worse, because it leaves a film on the fibre that holds the scent. This is why a freshly washed shirt can smell again ten minutes after you put it on: the source is not in the shirt, it is being resupplied all day.
The places you think about
Most people focus on underarms and feet. Nonenal forms where sebaceous glands are densest, and that is a different map entirely.

- Behind the ears. Almost always skipped in the shower. At nose height when someone hugs you.
- Back of the neck. The densest concentration of sebaceous glands on the body, and the exact spot your collar absorbs all day.
- Upper back. Hard to reach, so rarely washed properly. Transfers to the pillow overnight.
- Chest. Oil-rich, sitting directly under the shirt with almost no airflow.
The scalp belongs on the list too. Shampoo is formulated for hair, not for the skin underneath it.
Fragrance
Perfume is the instinctive response and the worst one. One scent does not cover another, it combines with it. Applying more fragrance creates a mixture that draws more attention than the original problem, and it signals to everyone nearby that something is being covered up.
There is a timing problem as well. Perfume fades over the course of the day. Nonenal builds up over the course of the day. The two curves run in opposite directions.
What actually works
The Japanese persimmon, or kaki, contains tannins. These compounds bind aldehydes. It is the same chemistry that gives an unripe persimmon its dry, puckering taste, and it is the basis of traditional Japanese persimmon soap, kakishibu, which has been in use for centuries.
The difference from everything else in your bathroom is not strength, it is approach. Surfactants try to wash the molecule off, which does not work. Fragrance tries to drown it out, which does not work either. Tannin binds it chemically, and in bound form it simply rinses away.
